Is Google's AI Overview the Same as ChatGPT?

Google's AI Overview is not the same product as ChatGPT, though they solve a similar problem. AI Overview runs on Google's own Gemini models and appears directly inside the regular search results page, above the normal list of links.

ChatGPT is a separate product from OpenAI, accessed through its own app or website, and now includes its own live web search feature built on a different underlying system entirely.

The two do share a broad family resemblance, both summarize web content into a written answer, but they pull from different indexes and are built by competing companies.
