How Do AI Search Engines Find Your Content?

AI search engines find content mostly the same way traditional search engines do, through dedicated crawlers. OpenAI runs OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search, Perplexity runs PerplexityBot, and Anthropic runs ClaudeBot, each respecting robots.txt rules.

Some also draw on licensed data partnerships and cached web indexes rather than crawling fresh every time a question comes in, which is part of why very new content can take longer to surface in AI answers than in Google.

A site that blocks these crawlers, intentionally or by accident through an old robots.txt file, simply will not appear in that tool's answers no matter how good the content is.
